About Curtain Wall

There are many definitions of Curtain Wall. Basically the name is derived from the concept that the exterior skin hangs on the superstructure like 'drapery', and does not bear the weight of the building itself. The term 'Window Wall' is often used to describe a special category of Curtain Walls made only with glazing components.

Aesthetics: Typically, a Curtain Wall is the most striking visual element of the building from the exterior. It is what initially draws 'Tenants' to rent or purchase office space, and this is our Client's primary objective.

Structural: Even though a Curtain Wall does not carry any of the building's loads, it must support its own self-weight, resist imposed wind loads, and remain structurally sound throughout its design life.
Weather-Resistance: Basically the Curtain Wall separates the exterior climate from the interior controlled climate. It achieves this through 'Thermal Insulation', providing a 'Water Barrier', and reducing 'Noise Levels'.

Design: The design of Curtain Wall typically involves several parties. The manufacturers of each individual component provide materials already designed to meet certain pre-established criteria. However, the connections between different systems and selection of components are left to the Project Designer. The responsibility in this area usually rests with the Architect and Engineer, and in some cases the Curtain Wall Contractor is charged with these responsibilities.

Materials: The material selected for each individual project usually relates to the Clients and Architects choices, however, local availability and climate zones also play an important factor. Materials must be chosen carefully to ensure the building maintains its appearance over its design life.

Construction: The overall quality of the Curtain Wall is dependent not only on good design, but also the way it is assembled in the fabrication plant, and the way it is erected in the field. The Curtain Wall contractor has a major responsibility in this area.

Operation: After the completion of the Curtain Wall installation, the continued performance is dependent on the 'building maintenance'. The system and equipment utilized to carry out maintenance duties must be suited to the type of Curtain Wall.
